Packers Release Rookie Cornerback, Sign Former Rival Wide Receiver Following Week 14 Loss to the New York Giants

The Green Bay Packers are now 6-7 following their disappointing 24-22 loss to the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. While they still maintain their hold on the NFC’s final playoff spot and control their own destiny, their most assured way to the NFL Playoffs is to win their final four regular season games.

This, of course, is easier said than done. Not only do they have two division games in the final two weeks of the season, their next game is against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who themselves are fighting for a playoff spot and have an identical 6-7 record.

One of the biggest obstacles the Packers are facing in the home stretch of the season is that they have a plethora of important players that are injured. Specifically, the wide receiver room has been dealt a couple of big blows in each of the past two games.

Christian Watson hurt his hamstring in the Packers’ victory over the Kansas City Chiefs and Dontayvion Wicks suffered what he believes is a high ankle sprain in their loss to the Giants.

The Green Bay Packers Sign a Former Chicago Bears Undrafted Rookie Wide Receiver Thyrick Pitts

The Packers had brought Thyrick Pitts in for a workout last week, but did not sign him right away. However, since Wicks went down, it appears they have made the decision that they need some extra depth at wide receiver. Per the team’s transaction wire, Pitts was signed to the practice squad on Tuesday.

Pitts played his college ball at the University of Delaware where he was a model of consistency at wide receiver. Between 2019 and 2022, he had three season of 600+ yards receiving. In 2020, the COVID-shortened season, he had 29 receptions for 451 yards and three touchdowns in eight games.

In 2022, his final season at Delaware, Pitts had 57 receptions for 631 yards and 10 touchdowns.

After going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft, Pitts was signed by the Chicago Bears, but waived in early August. He was then picked up by the New England Patriots, with whom he participated in training camp. Pitts also spent some time on the Patriots’ practice squad.

Green Bay released linebacker Austin Ajiake from the practice squad to make room for Pitts.

The Green Bay Packers Release Kyu Blu Kelly

In addition to their practice squad transactions, the Packers also released cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly. He was a fifth round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2023 NFL Draft, but did not make their 53-man roster. Kelly was then claimed by the Seattle Seahawks, with whom he appeared in five games on special teams.

Seattle released Kelly on November 11 and the Packers picked him up two days later. He appeared in two defensive plays and three special teams plays on Thanksgiving against the Detroit Lions, but otherwise has not seen the field. The Packers made Kelly a healthy scratch on Sunday prior to their loss to the Giants.

Kelly’s release may mean that the Packers are set to finally activate Eric Stokes from injured reserve. They had already designated him to return and he was questionable leading up to the Monday night game.
