BREAKING: The Green Bay Packers Add Veteran Quarterback To Roster

The Green Bay Packers are heading into the 2024 season with just as much confidence as anyone else in the league.  In Jordan Love’s first full season starting, the team wound up being just three points shy of reaching the NFC Championship game.

As the team prepares for Love’s second season under center, they are doing their homework for who may back him up.

The Green Bay Packers Add Veteran Quarterback To Roster Ahead Of 2024 Season

According to Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk:

The Packers are taking a look at a quarterback with a bit of pro experience this weekend.

Via Matt Schneidman of TheAthletic.com, Jacob Eason is participating at Green Bay’s rookie minicamp.

Eason, 26, was a Colts fourth-round pick in 2020 and served as the team’s third-string QB as a rookie. He then won the backup QB job for Indianapolis in 2021 over Sam Ehlinger out of training camp but was waived in October.

Eason has also spent time with the Seahawks, Panthers, 49ers, and Giants.

He’s appeared in two career games — both coincidentally against the Rams as an injury replacement. He has completed 5-of-10 passes for 84 yards with two interceptions.

The Packers currently have just Jordan Love and Sean Clifford on their roster at quarterback, so there could be an opportunity for Eason to stay with Green Bay as its third QB if all goes well this weekend.

The Packers Have Competition At Backup Quarterback This Season

It is expected that the Green Bay Packers will start the 2024 season with Jordan Love, Sean Clifford, and their most recent draft pick Michael Pratt. Brian Gutekunst has said consistently that he wants to create as many backup quarterback competitions at training camp as possible, even though this trio seems more than adequate.

Adding veteran Jacob Eason only creates a deeper competition at the position.  Clifford impressed the team last season so much that he outright won the backup QB spot before the season even started.  However, Pratt will certainly give Clifford a run for his money.  Greg Meinholz of Cheese Head TV did a great job of breaking down what Pratt will bring to Green Bay:

Michael Pratt was a four-year starter at QB for Tulane. In that time he started 44 games where he threw 90 TD passes, 26 INTs, and had 28 rushing TDs. He was projected to be a 4th or 5th-round pick but ended up falling into the Packers’ laps in the 7th at pick 245. The reason for Pratt’s fall is concern over an injury that hampered him throughout the 2023 season.

There’s been quite a bit of chatter that before the injury, there’s a chance Pratt would’ve been selected in the 2nd or 3rd round. So, for the Packers to land him in the 7th, a round considered to be very low-risk is perfect for finding out which Michael Pratt they might get.
