Brennen Davis Rejoined Cubs’ Top-30 and Celebrated with Another Dinger (UPDATE: Just Did It AGAIN!)

UPDATE: After this post was published, Brennen Davis hit ANOTHER home run, that’s four in his last five games.

This one was an opposite field blast that left his bat at 104.4 MPH and traveled 382 feet.

Original post follows.

I don’t know where this will ultimately go, and I still think we need to exercise some caution with our hopes, but it’s been a very good couple weeks for Brennen Davis.

Not only has the outfielder been hitting quite well at Triple-A Iowa, he’s also gotten himself back on the prospect radar:

With Ben Brown officially having graduated, Brennen Davis slides back onto the MLB Pipeline top-30 Cubs prospect list. Already on the 40-man roster, Davis has a chance to come up at some point this year and contribute if there were a need, and it’s comforting to know that he’s righting the ship.

In its writeup, though, the Pipeline crew does mention some of those concerns:

“Missing large chunks of the last three seasons has harmed Davis’ development as a hitter. He’s less balanced at the plate than he was earlier in his career, and he has more holes in his right-handed swing and makes less consistent contact than he did in the past. He still shows bat speed and the ability to work counts, but now he’s more of a power-over-hit guy with 25-homer potential.”

All fair stuff, of course, but none of it means Davis, 24, cannot be a useful big leaguer, even as his circumstances have changed. And speaking of the power, Davis showed it off again last night, homering for the third time in four games.

On the year, Davis is up to .224/.394/.469/126 wRC+ over 66 plate appearances. And if that .226 BABIP starts to regress back toward his more expected level, the line is going to get even more of a boost (he has a 23.5% line drive rate, so that BABIP just seems so low).
