Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 17

2024 Chicago Cubs Spring Training

Right-handed pitcher Ethan Roberts was promoted up to Iowa.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs lost to the Syracuse Mets, 12-5.

Starter Dan Straily took the loss after getting hammered for six runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings. He walked four and struck out five

Two of those hits were home runs to former Cub Trayce Thompson. Thompson would go on to hit a third home run tonight off of Sam McWilliams.

Second baseman Bryce Windham doubled twice in a 2 for 4 game.

Owen Caissie was in center field again and went 1 for 3 with a double and two walks. He had two RBI and scored once.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies burned the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels), 4-3.

Starter Matthew Thompson pitched six innings and allowed three runs on six hits. Two of those hits were solo home runs. He struck out five and walked one.

Frankie Scalzo Jr. pitched the top of the ninth and got the win after the Smokies walked it off in the bottom of the inning. Scalzo retired the first two batters, but then the next two reached on catcher’s interference and a single. But Scalzo got a fly out to left to end the threat. He did not strike anyone out.

Catcher Pablo Aliendo singled home third baseman Luis Verdugo with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Aliendo was 2 for 5 with a double and he scored once. Verdugo was 2 for 4 with a walk. He doubled before Aliendo singled him home.

Right fielder Ezequiel Pagan tied the game up when he connected for a two-run home run in the sixth inning. It was his fifth this year. Pagan went 2 for 4.

Second baseman James Triantos was 3 for 5 with a double. He scored once.

First baseman Haydn McGeary was 2 for 4.

The Smokies had 15 hits in this game and everyone in the lineup had at least one.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were boiled by the Ft. Wayne TinCaps (Padres), 8-7.

Drew Gray had some issues finding the plate today. Gray pitched two innings and surrendered four runs on two hits. Gray walked five and hit a batter while striking out two. Gray threw 64 pitches and only 29 of them were strikes.

Grayson Moore pitched the bottom of the eighth and took the loss after he allowed a run on no hits. He walked two and uncorked a wild pitch to score what turned out to be the winning run. Moore did strike out two.

Second baseman Pedro Ramirez was 2 for 5 and scored one run.

Left fielder Jordan Nwogu was 2 for 3 with a walk. He scored one time and drove in one.

Third baseman Reivaj Garcia hit a two-run triple in the third inning. He went 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly, giving him three RBI for the game.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans impeached the Fredericksburg Nationals, 6-3.

Nick Dean turned in a great start and got his second win. Dean went 5.2 innings and allowed no runs on just two hits. He struck out four and walked one.

Francis Reynoso pitched a perfect top of the ninth to get the save, striking out two.

DH Andy Garriola hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the first inning. He would later hit a double, going 2 for 4.

Center fielder Leonel Espinoza went 3 for 5 and scored two runs.

ACL Cubs

Lost to the White Sox, 8-4.

Second-round pick Jaxon Wiggins made his second start and allowed two runs on one hit over one inning. The one hit was a two-run home run. Wiggins walked two and struck out two.
